A 2026 Lancet Public Health systematic review and meta-analysis reinforces diabetes as one of the most developed oral-systemic evidence areas, examining the relationship between oral health and diabetes across the available literature.

The ADA describes the diabetes-periodontal relationship as bidirectional: hyperglycemia affects oral health while periodontitis can affect glycemic control. Treatment effects on glycemic outcomes, however, remain inconsistent across trials.
